What you willunderstand.
Dr. Mariana Waik is clear in the lecture: lipedema is not obesity. Diagnosis is clinical — inspection, disproportionate distribution, bilaterality, feet usually spared, pain to touch, and easy bruising. Pain intensity, in her account, does not follow BMI. You work through differentials (lymphedema, venous disease, lipohypertrophy), type and stage, tracking pain and edema, and the role of puberty, pregnancy, and the climacteric in local estrogen exposure — without reducing the picture to a single serum hormone.
- Separate lipedema from obesity on physical exam, not by weight alone
- Ask about pain to touch, bruising, and limb heaviness at day’s end
- Distinguish lymphedema (usually unilateral, foot involved) and venous disease
- Record stage, pain, and edema over time
